Love letter

Outfit: Sugar work skirt from Anthropologie/ Shirt, sunnies, and shoes from Urban Outfitters/ Necklace and bracelet from Modcloth/ Scarf from packaging from Clyde's Rebirth/

I threatened my friend earlier with the possibility of me being able to devote a love letter of a blog to her, and that's pretty doable- I feel like I could easily start up a whole new blog of love letters to the people in my life that I love, the people who inspire me on the interent (like the woman who's blog I'm dependent on for making interesting food and stylish ladies like Kendi and Monkeyface and a ridiculous amounts of other people), and the things in my life that I appreciate.  Right now though, a lot of my love might be taken up by this outfit (the cats woke me up in the middle of the night, so they're out).  After I threw it on, I thought I'd go up and take pictures, but was 90% sure that I'd end up changing out my skirt and shoes (because if we're being honest, the skirt is a little tight on me since I was so blinded by yellow skirt lust that I kept it even though it's a smaller size than what I need).  But after flouncing around in it, it won my heart, and I found I couldn't take it off.  Plus the shoes helped me to nominally tie in the scarf, which I've been sitting on since it came wrapped around my Clyde's Rebirth jewelry (which is a totally genius idea for packaging).  Again, I was totally charmed since normally I find it next to impossible to get things to stay put on my head when they go all the way around it (also it was the perfect answer to the question of whether I really needed to wash my hair this morning- it's cool, I washed it tonight after dance class).  Also one of the guys in my lab complimented me on my hair thing today, which means that it totally worked as a distraction from the actual hair (win!).

Outfit: Skirt: Ruche, Shirt, Shoes: Urban Outfitters, Necklace: Clyde's Rebirth, Bracelet: Hawaii Airport

I hadn't planned on there being so much time between this and the last posts, but we wound up with a slightly longer vacation in Mexico than had been planned.  Spent mostly in the Cancun airport.  After having a hard time getting out of the country (we missed getting up to the check-in counter by a couple minutes and had to be on stand-by all day to get out to Cancun) I was less than delighted to have to do the same thing heading home (this time it wasn't our fault- the flight got canceled and they didn't schedule us to go out until two days after our original flight).  Needless to say, I'm delighted to be back home and getting back into the normal routine, or I will be just as soon as I recover from my vacation :)  Mexico itself was pretty awesome, and my brother's wedding was amazing, I just wish I had spent more time on beaches and less in the airport!

A little silly and a lotta hat

It's Friday, and I think that means I'm fresh out of words today.  I can't really think of anything to talk about how than my delight in having cake for breakfast (I didn't have any last night, so it's okay).  Plus it has strawberries in it, so it's basically healthy for you, right?  On a completely unrelated note, I'm still not sure how I feel about myself in hats (I was an avowed non-hat wearer for years), but I am sure that I love this hat.  And I kinda love that last picture (even though you can't see my hat).  I shall now write a sentence composed entirely of the word hat: Hat hat, hat hat?

Wearing this skirt makes me happy (so happy I dance around the parking garage), but I'm kinda tempted to go back in and fiddle with it so that it's not quite as voluminous at the waist band- it's just a lot of fabric to deal with.  Only kinda tempted though, so it'll probably never happen, since it's way easier to just keep wearing it, and try to keep in mind the things I want to change for future skirts (if I ever make them).  My co-worker called me out on that yesterday- she wanted to know what I had sewn lately, and why I hadn't been wearing anything interesting that I had sewn to school (whoops), and then told me to get to it.  I was going to get to it last night, but then the bf suggested we have one of these drinks, and suddenly sewing something together (that I might actually want to wear in the future) seemed like less of a good idea (and hanging out on the internet seemed like more of a good idea).

Doing it myself (with a little help)

1. It's time for the second edition of the Paper doll project, also known as one of those glorious days where I don't have to dress myself, and someone else makes that hard decision for the day.  I was pleased as punch by the outfit that Cassie picked out, and really enjoyed getting to style her (once again by picking out some of my favorite items she's used for outfit posts- and they're all thrifted).  Check out the links to everyone else's looks here!

2.  I made my skirt! After dropping some subtle hints (followed by some very unsubtle hints) to the bf that I'd appreciate having a sewing machine to make my own clothes (and replace some zippers that I've needed to do for quite some time).  It's an early anniversary present (which he knew I'd want to play with immediately, so he gave it to me as soon as it came in and making sure it arrived on the weekend).  I made it by combining this skirt that I first saw on Sarah (based off of a tutorial from Megan Nielson's diy maternity site) with some touches from this elastic waist band skirt (mostly the pockets), and my own desires (has two tiers of fabric, and it's not reversible, even though reversible things are awesome, cuz I decided I wanted a different style skirt from the other fabric I purchased).  I'm really looking forward to making more things (suggestions?) and awkwardly asking friends for their waist size so that I can make them all skirts.

3.  Bf looked at me getting ready this morning and said that he really liked it- I dress for myself, and I don't (often) ask his opinions on what I'm wearing (except when I'm actually planning an outfit out for a reason), so when he offers one up I treasure it (even when he says I look good while wearing a tshirt and leggings).  Bf approved ftw!

The best bike rack in Houston

I coerced Bf to take these photos while we were running over to do Pub Trivia at one of the local bars, since I'm so in love with both of these items that I picked up a little while back when Lisa did a sale, and I'm delighted that there ended up being a couple of cooler days this week so I could wear it now (instead of staring longingly at it all summer).  I even got to wear my boots during the day! I never thought I'd be wearing a knit skirt and boots in May in Houston, but I'm glad to be proven wrong.  Unfortunately, the first round of trivia was based off of current events, and since I get most of my news by way of twitter, I'm not necessarily the most informed and we were not totally awesome at trivia.  Fortunately, there was a ridiculously awesome bike rack that looks like a bike nearby and I got to take a picture with it (and plan on using it many times over the summer now that it's staying light out later and bf has a bike).

Long time coming

You would think that it wouldn't take me over a month and a half to put together a post using pictures that I didn't even have to take (or process for that matter since they came to me beautiful already by way of the adorable Suze of Miss Vinyl Ahoy.  Unfortunately, if you thought that, you'd be wrong.  I still have vague good intentions of finishing up the wrap-up post on TxSCC, but in the meantime, I couldn't wait any longer to put up the best pictures ever seen on this blog (and number 23 on the list of why I want to get a DSLR).  I struggle with other people taking my picture (and not spending the entire time making ridiculous faces), but it was pretty spectacular having someone who knew what they were doing taking outfit pictures.  I didn't get a huge number of pictures with the other attendees, but I'm so glad that I got one with Suze.

I can't remember if I've said this before, but it bears repeating. Meeting people at TxSCC was the best part of it all- I was worried about being the awkward shy kid in the corner, but after sending a tweet Suze's way she looked all over for me and even enlisted the help of Amy of Stylish Year (who just finished her first year- go check it out). She then endeared herself further to me when she offered to take outfit pictures the next day of one my favorite outfits that I've ever worn.

MOAR arches!

This is my serious face. Also the face that I make after I think I might have terrified a college student.  Unlike yesterday, this time when someone walked past me they walked very quickly with a look of terror, and then it looked like he had pressed his face up against the glass of the door he just entered (probably thinking wtf).  I was really tempted to throw the door open and say "haven't you ever seen someone taking pictures of themselves in their awesome new skirt before?" But then I realized that I would never be able to get it all out from laughing too hard, and the poor kid had probably been through enough already.

P.S. I just got this skirt in the mail from TwitchVintage's ebay store (she sells vintage and is totally adorable) and basically couldn't resist wearing the skirt as soon as I had opened the package. Win.

Whenever I'm sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead

Before I forget to include this-getting dressed this morning, I was totally at a loss for what to wear when I remembered that one of the most fabulous people in my life ever, Vicki (who has posted here, just not recently) sent me an email this morning with a link to an adorable dress in an attempt to cheer me up (I haven't been at my best the past couple days), and it just so happened to be this dress! Except in a different color.  Which I will now have to resist buying.  So really, it was the most logical choice for getting dressed this morning.  In addition to having to teach her phone the word "cupcakey", she also quoted one of my favorite Neil Patrick Harris characters- "I've been trying to adopt this philosophy (at the very least it always makes me smile): 'Whenever I'm sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.'"

I have sometimes wondered what it would be like if I had started style blogging back in college- more time, more flexibility in my schedule, and most of all- the potential for neat (and safe) locations.  And somehow it took me six months, two beers, and canceled singing practice to realize that there is in fact a college campus ridiculously close to where I spend my days.  And for whatever reason, at least when I've walked through it (to get to the bar where I got those two beers for about $3 total, which is pretty amazing), it doesn't seem like there's a ton of people walking around.  Plus there are arches!

Lots of arches!  Well, there are definitely a few people walking around, but for whatever reason, it seems like even a girl taking pictures of herself was totally not on their register.  As you can see below, I'm the one giving off the funny look, not the person who walked right past my camera totally unfazed.

I'm excited to get back to posting on a regular basis, since I know that I've been desperately lax on since I've been dealing with some extra stuff going on at work (a weekend conference, a committee meeting, and feelings of inadequacy).  But I'm even more excited about putting up pictures of my new bling from my favorite cat lady's etsy store (although the bf took one look at the ring and said "Is that a rock?  See, this is why I don't know how to buy jewelry for you!")  I've managed to collect some pretty interesting things over the past few years, and I am massively excited to be adding these two pretties.
