Hey Anthropologie lovers,

Is it just me, or do some of these Modcloth items look a lot like (now out of stock) Anthro items from the recent past?  I know, they both (along with plenty of other online boutiques) strive to capture a vintage flavor and they will sometimes show items from the same lines (Seychelles, Burlapp), but when browsing through some recent arrivals at Modcloth I was struck by similarity some of these items.  While the quality/fabric/price of most of these items may not be the same as the originals (and note they're usually on the short side for us taller folk), they may present an opportunity to get the look of some items that are no longer available (and available at a more reasonable price).  Okay, okay- the first one is cheating a little since both dresses are actually from the same designer (Modcloth dresses on the left, Anthropologie on the right).

Images come from Modcloth.com or Anthropologie.com (from the review of the item), and should link back to the site in an effort to appropriately credit.

  1. Knock-off city! I've seen (and fallen in love with) the bicycle dress, but am no as familiar with the others. If baby brother follows through on a Mod Cloth gift card for Christmas, I think I might have some forerunners for my first choice. :)

  2. The similarities are striking! The second dress is like an exact replica!

To be honest though-- I think this is the most awesome thing ever! I've got Anthropologie dreams on a graduate student budget, so the cheaper I can get the pretty, the better!

  3. Sarah- your brother is awesome if he does that, and you better post if you end up getting something!

Theputtogethergirl- the 2nd one was definitely the one that struck me the most. Modcloth is good for vintage inspired clothing- but you can also find super cute and fairly reasonable things at lulus.com and shopruche.com. Making $2/hr as a grad student I can only afford anthro on sale, so one thing that sometimes works is making a wishlist on their site of things that I'd like (that may one day go on sale) and then wait for them to get to a reasonable price orrrr wait for them to get a 2nd/3rd cut, which sometimes you miss out or sometimes they pop back on the wishlist and you can buy an anthro dress for $20-40. It's just a gamble.

  5. Part of the art of fashion has always been the ability to copy, but usually trends are given at least a few decades to cycle through. This is nuts!

The big one I've noticed is World Market. Their accessories are a lot like Anthro's. And I'll shop world market. Antho's on my blacklist ever since I was treated cruelly there once. http://interrobangsanon.wordpress.com/2010/02/09/dear-anthropologie-were-done/

  6. Notice how much shorter the ModCloth dresses are? Not cool for gals with longer legs.

  7. Louise- I had actually seen that post earlier today and read through some of the comments- it seems like it's inspiring a lot of discussion among the fashion blogging community. To be fair to the Modcloth's vendors, there have been instances of Anthropologie being cited as copying very closely from vintage dresses, so I'm not sure how much to fault the designers for copying a copy. As a customer at stores like this, I know that I'm buying into something that is likely heavily influenced by a previously made item- they are known for vintage/retro styles.

Interrobangsanon- I am also surprised at how closely in time these dresses have been released. I've never really been aware of the jewelry at World Market, but I'm also not always totally into Anthro's. That's a shame about your experience at Anthro- I can only speak for myself but I've always felt treated with respect and friendliness when I've gone into the brick and mortar stores, and I think it's awful what happened to you.

  8. Jess- I know, right? They do have a section marked longer lengths, but it's 35 in and up- on me a 35 inch long dress is basically the minimum for decency. Anything less ventures into shirt territory. Unfortunately, that's true in a lot of clothes marketed towards my demographic (even at Anthro), but I mean- I complain about things being too short and a petite girl might find the same thing too long. We all have our preferences for length and just have to shop accordingly (or modify the dress).
