Near misses and near matches

Today I had the worst bike ride home ever.  Admittedly, I've struggled with keeping the tires filled up, I always seem to end up losing lots of air whenever I try.  And there was a bit of a wind, and I was feeling tired.  I figured this was responsible for my struggling to move faster than a snail's pace.  I seriously considered hopping off and walking, that's how bad I felt.  Looking back on it, that would've been a really good idea, since I would've been able to figure out immediately what was wrong, but no, I'm not a quitter!  No man or machine can best me!  Well, a combination of both almost did. In order to pull into the driveway that goes up to my complex, I looked behind me and decided that I had enough time to get over to the other lane to turn in before the nearest car caught up to me.  Apparently, I misjudged just how slow I was traveling, since I almost got ran over by that car.  There wasn't any honking, so I'm guessing that the driver wasn't paying as much attention as he/she should have been and didn't hold me solely responsible for what happened.  It was a terrifying couple of seconds, since I just couldn't get my bike to do what I needed it to and it just wouldn't move anywhere quickly.
What was wrong with it?  Apparently, the back brakes were clamped down, so while the front tire was moving normally, the back one was barely able to move.  This is the result of irresponsible bike lock placement, since I typically let it arrange itself organically, which ended up interfering with the brake line.  Hopefully I didn't permanently damage anything, since I already feel bad enough about torturing my poor bike.  At least I had on a cute outfit while doing so?

The near match for today was between the blue in my cardigan and the blue in my dress- in my closet they looked like the same color, but when I got to work it looked completely different.  I'm guessing no one really noticed (or cared), since I tend to dress a little differently from most of the grad students around, and it's a pretty busy pattern (also, neat-looking).  Both the dress and the cardigan I'm wearing are from Modcloth.com, which sells clothes that really aren't actually my size, but sometimes a really full skirt balances out the tightness of the top enough for me to gleefully throw the clothes on, and cover it up with a cardigan.

  1. YIKES!!! That sounds absolutely terrifying! Be careful, girl! And the brakes thing sounds like something I totally would do. I guess the good thing is you'll never do that again.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE your outfit! You look beautiful, put together, it hugs your curves in all the right places, I love the pattern and colors, and (good for you), it looks totally comfortable to wear all day. Girl, you fly! What kind of cut/style is the dress? Sleeveless, tube, cap sleeve, etc.? You look so awesome. :)

  2. Unfortunately, I think grad school has exacerbated my flakiness. Thanks for being my cheering section :) I like the way that it looked on- my biggest concern about wearing it was more the durability of the dress- it's pretty thin fabric, which is superb for the climate, but I don't know how it'll hold up. http://www.modcloth.com/store/ModCloth%2FWomens/Scavenger+Hunt+Dress This baby is either strappy or strapless. Mmmm, cap sleeves.

  3. I'm glad you're ok! Do you know, someone on a bike did almost this exact same thing in front of me as I was leaving the vet school parking lot to go park my car after dropping Patches off at PT. It was scary for me, and I was the one in the car! I totally agree that your outfit is adorable-the base blue of the dress suits you perfectly!
